Lake Traunsee in the Salzkammergut region is a popular holiday destination for hiking among active travellers and culture lovers. They flock to the Alps’ northern edge from near and far to discover the magnificent scenery that is blessed by natural splendour. When it comes to outdoor recreation, hiking, skiing and climbing are particularly popular here: selected offers invite the whole family to enjoy outdoor adventures. Lake Traunsee, Austria's deepest body of water, is also located in the Salzkammergut. Its deep blue water refreshes both visitors and locals. The lake is surrounded by a magnificent alpine panorama, which combines various mountains and unparalleled stories.
Feuerkogel and hiking are two words that are inseparably linked to mountain sports in Upper Austria. After all, the majestic local mountain in Ebensee offers wonderful routes for all fitness levels. From the village a cable car comfortably takes you to the top of the mountain. There you can enjoy a wonderful view of the valley and a refreshing snack. Before arriving, remember that it is usually windy at an altitude of 1,592 metres. Warm clothes should thus be part of your Salzkammergut hiking gear, no matter the season.
Rugged MountTraunstein is set on the eastern shore of the lake of the same name. At 1,691 m above sea level, it is higher than its neighbour, the Feuerkogel. As a result, the vegetation of the majestic mountains is noticeably different, which also applies to the animal world. Hiking Traunstein includes not only the enjoyment of wonderful flora, but also various options between attractive routes. The easy trails are ideal for families or new hikers. Dogs may also explore the surroundings and get to enjoy an individual hiking Traunstein experience. However, it is advisable to always keep your four-legged friend on a leash for safety reasons. The challenging ascents are recommended exclusively for experienced summiteers. Unlike the easy paths, these are not secured in any way. The ascent to the mountain peak also leads through steep slopes and uneven debris.
An excursion to the Langbath lakes is not to be missed. These are located about eight kilometres west of the municipality. The Vordere Langbathseelake is highly popular among bathers due to its water quality. The Hintere lake is an inviting place for an extended rest. It is best to explore these natural oases on foot or by bike. The carefully maintained circular hiking trails of the lake region are ideal for this purpose. Animal lovers will also appreciate the local panoramic riding trail. Walks and hiking in the Salzkammergut mountains obviously go hand-in-hand: You can reach the Feuerkogel summit at 832 meters altitude. The Schlafluckensteig ascent at 828 meters altitude leads you to the summit cottage Hochleckenhaus am Brunnkogel.
At the foot of the Dead Mountains you can explore another natural treasure of Upper Austria. Here an enchanting mountain lake awaits your visit. Emperor Franz Joseph I was already inspired by its appearance. It is obvious why the famous monarch built his hunting lodge just a few minutes’ walk from the water. Let yourself be enchanted by the royal charm before taking a plunge into the cool waters of LakeOffensee. In the summer months, its water temperature climbs to a pleasant 22°C. A shady place to relax can be found along the numerous gravel beaches, which invite you to linger in the tranquil natural paradise of Offensee.
Mount Erlakogel is the second highest mountain in Lake Traunsee’s direct proximity. Its nickname is the Sleeping Greek Woman, which can be traced back to a popular legend: A noble woman is said to have been turned into a rock by furious King Dachstein. The curse, which lasts to this day, punished the lady for flirting with Traunstein, who was banned to the edge of the kingdom. The officially marked hiking trail is recommended to ascend and descend the mountain. It is a developed path, so that less experienced hikers can also spend unforgettable moments outdoors in the shadow of the sleeping beauty.
Expect an ascent time of three hours even in good weather. The descent usually takes a similar amount of time. Plan for roughly eight hours for the entire trip in any case. After all, restful breaks should be enjoyed even beneath the summit.
